Desta Galley to Open LINE, FORM AND TEXTURE Exhibit, 6/9
Desta Galley presents Line, Form and Texture - a new exhibit for summer of 2015, featuring
paintings and ceramic sculptures from local Bay Area artists. The public is invited to
a meet and greet artist reception on Friday, June 19th. Desta's renowned hand-blended
tea infused cocktails, champagne and light appetizers will be served.
The artists:
Jeff McLane - Painter
Jeff is a San Francisco native and received a Bachelor of Fine Art from San Diego
State University in 1988 and a Master of Landscape Architecture from UC Berkeley
in 1991. His latest work is inspired by studies in science and the arts, and the
implications of meaning: How we organize, map, and navigate the internal landscape
as an ephemeral, changing and deeply personal space. The pieces are composed of
atmospheric fields, with line, texture, form, and edges developed from shapes
and colors in the fields. Each piece is developed through an intensive process
of layering and removal of the media. The media is acrylic paint, gesso, graphite
sticks and powder, and ink on acrylic and watercolor papers using spreading,
wiping, scraping, sketching, drafting, and painting techniques. He uses tools
that are made for sculpture and other arts to apply the media to paper, metal
and glass plates, wires and scrapers, brushes, sand paper, wipes, and sponges.
The work is spontaneous and gestural, detailed and refined.
Jennifer Hirshfield - Painter
Jennifer is a graduate of the University of California, Davis. Her latest work,
"Person, Place, or Thing", is a cumulative body of work that highlights and
investigates the figure, landscapes, the idea of place, essential beings and
objects. All are tied together in these paintings through palette and use of
like materials. Collectively the works express a story of joy, sorrow and
excitement on life's journey.
Kathy Pallie - Ceramic Sculpturist
Kathy received a BFA cum laude in Art from Boston University. Texture and
surface exploration integrated with a 3-dimensional form have always been
a part of her clay work. She approaches form and surface texture as one,
rather than create a form to use as a canvas for painting. Most of her
clay work is hand built as opposed to wheel thrown. Her hands manipulate
the clay by pushing, pulling, pinching, incising and rolling, creating
an effect evoking both the visual and tactile senses. She works with clay
slabs, coils, and extruded shapes and uses various clay bodies, firing
processes, glazes, and cold finishes to achieve her results.

Painting by Richard Patt.
June 05, 2015
Fine Line Designs Gallery's 2015 season continues with Exhibit II, featuring the work of
fiber artist Martha Fieber, oil painter Frankie Johnson, acrylic painter Richard Patt,
and ceramic artist Renee Schwaller. Exhibit II begins June 5, with an artist reception
n planned for June 6, 4 – 7 pm. An artist demonstration featuring Frankie Johnson is
planned for June 7, 11 am – 2 pm, where Johnson will discuss figurative painting
techniques. Both the artist reception and demonstration are free and open to the public.
Even though they appear two-dimensional, Fieber's "Landscapes in Thread" are anything
but. Fieber's works are rich in depth and dimension, which she achieves by using silk,
rayon, metallic, or hand-dyed cotton threads as well as ribbons and tiny beads. The
mediums build upon each other to create ultra-realistic natural scenes.
Oil painter Frankie Johnson has been painting since she was 10 years old, when her
grandmother gifted her a summer of private painting classes. She's been painting
ever since. In addition to creating her own work, Johnson now owns her own fine
art school in her home of Wauconda, Illinois.
For acrylic painter Richard Patt, having a historic feed mill as a studio makes
perfect sense when considering his subject matter – landscapes and Wisconsin barns.
Patt begins a landscape barn scene relying only on his memories, impressions and
emotions, and infuses each work with a strong horizontal
linear quality that has become characteristic of his work.
"I draw from the things that bring me joy," said Door County ceramic artist
Renee Schwaller. Her work is painted with underglazes and slips, and then carved
using the sgraffito method. Her entire collection of work is created from start
to finish in her Egg Harbor studio, where she's inspired
by everything from the natural world around her to her home and gallery.
Exhibit II is scheduled to run through July 6. For more information visit

This VFX breakdown of how landscapes on Game Of Thrones are created doesn’t take
away any of the magic.
Pixomondo studios provide the visual trickery on the HBO show, and their Matte Painting
department does something pretty spectacular.
Matte Painting Artists from around the world help create stunning, lifelike images of castles
and medieval scenes, breathing life into each location by incorporating back story.
For example, in George RR Martin’s novels he describes Harrenhall as having once been attacked
by a dragon. The artists then had to think carefully about how the structure might look after being engulfed in flames.
Thanks to behance.net we have an in-depth look at how Senior Matte Painting Artist Sven Sauer
puts together the Matte Paintings for the show.
Have a look at how the magic is created below.
