Artists Program
Artists benefit from being part of a collaborative and learning environment in the greater metropolitan Washington region.
Shared values of artists in the program include:
Utilizing a unique workspace to create art
Creatively growing within a community of artists
Continuing to learn the business of art
Producing sales of artwork
Gaining professional visibility
All artists in the Program are considered Artists at the Workhouse. Click here for a full statement of policy for the Artists Program.
Studio Artists at the Workhouse: Rent studios in W-5, W-6 or W-10 and work within the artist community to help maintain a shared environment.
Resident Artists at the Workhouse: Rent studios in W-7 or W-8 as part of the Ceramics or Glass programs. They may also be part of a military initiative with the Workhouse. They are required to help with daily operational activates, fundraising, outreach and helping to support a collective work environment. Click here to learn more about the Ceramics Residency Program and the Glass Residency Program.
Emerging Artists at the Workhouse: Largely part of the Ceramics or Glass programs, these artists are on their way to becoming Resident or Studio artists.
Associate Artists at the Workhouse: While these artists don’t have a studio at the Workhouse, they work collectively to maintain a gallery space in W-9 and pay a $45 monthly fee.
Facilities: Facilities are state of the art. Studio Artists share sinks in the back of each building. Each building acts as a community within a community, maintain a gallery. The Glass Program offers fully equipped kiln, formed glass and flame working and cold shop. The Ceramics Program offers 21 wheels, two indoor kiln rooms and an outdoor kiln yard.
Studios: Most studios range between 215 sq ft (approx. $360/month) and 430 sq ft (approx. $685/month). Studio rent includes heat/AC, water, historical brick walls, large historical windows, florescent lighting, hanging tracks and free internet hookups.
Added Benefits: Artists have 24 hour access, sales support (30% commission), marketing assistance, exhibition opportunities, and ability to change studios without penalty, and free parking.
Current Artists at the Workhouse may utilize an “Artists Tool Box” online, where information is listed.
Selection: Each artist is juried into the program. Jurors include an outside juror and current Artists at the Workhouse. The Workhouse selects artists that:
Are innovative in production and concept, culturally relative, and demonstrate a technical mastery of a media.
Participate in juried shows, curated exhibitions or are represented in private collections.
Show a commitment to their artistic career through an existing body of work. Create all original art and concepts.
