Nicole Klagsburn is closing her Chelsea gallery. After almost 30 years spent promoting the rising stars of Western contemporary art

Nicole Klagsburn is closing her Chelsea gallery. After almost 30 years spent promoting the rising stars of Western contemporary art, including Candida Hofer, Karen Kilimnik and Rashid Johnson, the sharp-eyed dealer still wants to continue working with the artists she supports, but outside the gallery system, which no longer holds any interest for her. She told The Art Newspaper last week that a dealer’s job is to edit an artist’s work but your eye for quality gets swallowed up by this endless sea of events, fairs and biennials. She also said that she is neither “sick nor broke”. “I just don’t want the gallery system anymore. The old school way was to be close to the artists and to the studios. Nowadays, it’s run like a corporation. After 30 years, this is not what I aspire to do. It is uninteresting.” Nicole Klagsburn’s statements was issued close on the heels of very similar comments by Jérôme and Emmanuelle de Noirmont.
