seeking artists, different roles involved in the art world

Kentucky Arts Council seeking artists for Architectural Artists Directory
RANKFORT The Kentucky Arts Council is accepting applications for its Architectural Artists Directory through Aug. 17.

The directory is an adjudicated marketing program for Kentucky’s finest architectural artists who have an established history of working on special architectural or design-oriented projects and installations.

The directory is open to Kentucky artists whose work includes architectural elements, custom-made fixtures, uniquely crafted building materials and design elements.

“The Architectural Artists Directory is a valuable resource for builders, designers and even private clients to find a talented artist to complement their designs,” said Lori Meadows, arts council executive director.

Karine Maynard, who with her husband, Matthew, operates Maynard Studios in Lawrenceburg, has been in the directory since 2011. She said the directory is a good jumping-off point for clients to view artistic options to go with their building designs. The Maynards are designers, blacksmiths and metal artists who use metal and architectural space as their media. As a husband-and-wife team, they specialize in hand-forged custom stair rails, furniture and applied design.

“This is a wonderful resource for clients who have already discovered our work,” Karine Maynard said. “For me to be able to have a brochure that I can refer them to other architectural artists that can help them complete their work is just great for architectural art all around.

“And it’s nice to have all these great architectural artists in one book,” she said. “The artists in it already have a certain level of respect. The directory has been a terrific resource, and it elevates all Kentucky artists.”

For more information on the Architectural Artists Directory, contact Kate Sprengnether, arts council public art and design director, at kate.sprengnether@ky.gov or 502-564-3757, ext. 471.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, fosters environments for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts. The arts council, along with the NEA, is celebrating 50 years of service in 2015, which the arts council is recognizing as the Year of the Arts in Kentucky.

I spent one week at Modern Art Oxford for work experience to gain further understanding of the different roles involved in the art world. One of the A-levels that I hope to study is History of Art, which covers the Renaissance period, so my aim in working at Modern Art Oxford was to provide a contrast and broader perspective on contemporary art.

My knowledge of art is fairly limited which was something I hoped to improve. Being at the gallery has definitely helped my interpretation and appreciation of art as I spent part of my time shadowing Duty Managers giving tours to the public of Lynn Hershman Leeson’s Origins of the Species (Part 2) and I spent time with the Visitor Assistants who invigilate the exhibitions and answer any queries from the public.

Another of my objectives was to gain a wider understanding of how a gallery works, what the different roles are and how this relates to the art world. During my time here I have learnt about Communications, Development, Programming, Retail and Front of House, as well as the importance of exhibition checking, production and the artists influence. I was introduced to each individual role in the running of Modern Art Oxford. I learned how powerful social media can be if used effectively and had the opportunity to draft content relating to upcoming events.

I was enthusiastic about the creative side of working in a gallery and found that this aspect linked with social media and publicity. I spent time taking photos of the work in the two exhibitions and working with the Retail Manager. I also had a chance to look through exhibition catalogues dating back to the1970s, which gave me an insight into contemporary and modern art.

Overall, my time at Modern Art Oxford was very beneficial and increased my understanding of the art world, the running of a gallery and the different departments and roles involved.
