Santa Clarita seeks new art exhibit proposals

The city of Santa Clarita is inviting artists and artist teams to submit proposals for an art exhibition at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.

Those interested must submit an application — including an explanation of their vision of the exhibit, three previous works, and two articles of support material — by Sept. 1.

“We want applicants to submit written proposals detailing the concept and theme of the exhibit they have envisioned, along with examples of the type of art which would be included in the exhibit,” said city Arts and Events Supervisor Jeff Barber. “We’re mainly looking for sculptural art rather than paintings.”

The selected artists will receive $500, funded from the city budget, to cover for project-related costs such as design fee, travel, consultation and project fabrication.

The winning art work will be displayed on a 20-by-20-foot-space at the Town Center mall dubbed “Art Space.” It’s located next to Sisley on the lower level of the mall.

Separately, the city is accepting entries for a new abstract art gallery on the first floor of City Hall.

Applicants must submit a letter explaining their inspiration for the work, along with three previous works they have completed. Applications are accepted until Oct. 1.

Downtown Blacksburg Inc. announces Art at the Market prize winners


On July 18, Downtown Blacksburg Inc. presented the annual Art at the Market event.

More than 25 years old, this popular annual art show and sidewalk exposition included 32 participating artists this year and featured unique works in abstract acrylics, collage, flowers, wood, still life, photography and even stone sculpture.

The show began at 9 a.m. and accompanied the annual Breakfast at the Farmers Market with live music provided by Ragtop and Mist on the Mountain.

Pat Buckley Moss and her daughter Rebecca Ghezzi worked together as jurors for the show this year and expressed delight at the extremely high standard and variety of work on display at this event.

Moss was born on Staten Island, New York, in 1933 and graduated from The Cooper Union, the prestigious New York college for the arts and sciences. She is best known for her “Valley style” watercolors of the Amish and Mennonites and tranquil landscapes.

Ghezzi was born in Port Arthur, Texas. She holds a BFA in printmaking from the Corcoran College of Art and an MFA in printmaking and book arts from the University of Georgia. She has taught at various schools, including the Amity School of Arezzo, George Washington University and the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. She now manages the P. Buckley Moss Gallery in Blacksburg.

Prizes were awarded in two categories: two-dimensional and three-dimensional works.

All winners received ribbons and the top three received checks for $100 for firstst place, $75 for second place and $50 for third place.
