Qatar takes the crown

Child With A Dove, a work symbolic of Picasso’s blue period that has been exhibited for over 40 years at the National Gallery in London, has just been purchased by the Qatar Museum Authority. The masterpiece was put up for sale last summer by its owners, the Aberconway family, which acquired the painting in 1924. The British Department for Culture had placed a temporary export bar on the painting given its importance as a national treasure. Almost a year later, the £50 million needed to keep the work on British soil had not been collected by the state and the Art Council will be forced to let the painting go.

Qatar has grown to become the leading buyer of art worldwide, spending as much as $1 billion on expanding its collection. Child With A Dove is on display at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London in the “Becoming Picasso: Paris 1902″ exhibition until 27 May.
