Graffiti artists, muralists wanted
Right after Bob Waun moved into his office in downtown Pontiac, he looked out the window and saw a bit of non-PG-rated graffiti on the wall outside: “[Screw] the Fed” accompanied by a skull and crossbones.

“Having been a banker, it offended me,” Waun said with a laugh.

Eventually, that was covered up with the whale mural at 29 N. Saginaw St. that says “Pontiac is for lovers,” done by a graffiti artist whose street name is Houdini. Waun, vice president of business development for Birmingham-based Core Partners LLC,and one of the investors in the Indian Hill project, had put an ad on Craigslist seeking a “good graffiti artist” or muralist to fix it.

Now Waun, who owns several buildings downtown, and others are inviting additional artists to come to the city to use privately owned buildings as their canvasses.

"Downtown Pontiac has many available walls for artist expression. We have storefronts waiting to become art galleries and studios, and dozens of artists call the new Indian Hill district of downtown Pontiac home. We welcome all to participate, as Pontiac is a big tent, not a closed club to a few people," he said.

Of course, there are various layers of approval needed from the city for something like that, according to Gordon Bowdell, associate planner for Pontiac. He said depending on where the building is located downtown, it could require the OK from the seven-member Pontiac Historic Commission and/or the city’s building department.

Bowdell said the city has not yet been formally notified of the art effort.

All this comes a week after the Detroit Police Department issued a warrant for the arrest of graffiti artist Shepard Fairey, best known for his “Hope” poster that became an icon of Barack Obama’s successful 2008 presidential campaign. Fairey allegedly vandalized nine sites in May, resulting in more than $9,000 in damage to city-owned and private property.

“Rather than arrest artists, let’s get creative and find ways to give them a canvas for public displays of artwork,” Waun said.

Prior to the warrant, Fairey was in Detroit to complete an 18-story mural on the former Compuware Corp. headquarters at One Campus Martius that is now owned by Dan Gilbert’s Bedrock Real Estate Services LLC and Detroit-based Meridian Health.

“The idea is to say that private property owners are embracing art and culture, and we would be welcoming to any artist,” Waun said. “We’d love to have more artists involved in re-creating the future of the city of Pontiac.”

So, let’s see where this goes.

Just, please, no F-bombs.
