ArtRio 2015 will be held from September 9 to 13. The success of the fourth edition of ArtRio confirmed the fair as one of the most important on the world art scene. The fair welcomed 52,000 visitors to view works shown by 106 galleries in 20,000 square meters of space in warehouses 1, 2, 3, and 4 at Pier Mauá.

AMADANSETT, NEW YORK -- Before Beyonce and Jay-Z, before the Kardashians, before the multi-million-dollar McMansions, the eastern end of Long Island was a flat farmland dotted with small country towns.
Its first settlers were colonists who had arrived from Massachussetts. For hundreds of years, the area resembled New England more so than New York.

PARIS -- Nicolas Bourriaud has been dismissed from his position as director of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, the distinguished National Fine Art Academy in Paris, by the Minister of Culture, Fleur Pellerin.

Pellerin fired Bourriaud, pictured here, unceremoniously on Wednesday morning, after a 45-minute exchange. According to the French paper Le Figaro, during their lengthy meeting, the Minister of Culture explained that she had "another educational project in mind" for the Fine Art Academy.
When Bourriaud pressed for clarity on the nature of this educational project, he received no satisfactory reply.

BASEL -- For collectors returning from Art Basel, one question looms large: Where do you put that 16-foot-tall and 29.5-foot-wide painting that comes with six pink chairs?

MONTSERRAT, SPAIN -- The Turner Prize nominated international artist Sean Scully, has revealed his completely bespoke chapel housed in the recently renovated Romanesque Church of Santa Cecília de Montserrat, outside Barcelona.
The chapel was unveiled yesterday, Tuesday 30 June 2015, on the artist’s 70th birthday.

NEW YORK CITY -- The art world celebrity and performance artist Marina Abramović is to collaborate with French fashion house Givenchy and its creative director, Riccardo Tisci, on his upcoming spring New York fashion show.

Now the museum’s proposed branch in Helsinki, Finland, is a step closer to reality, with the selection of a design that features charred timber and glass punctuated by a lighthouse-like tower overlooking South Harbor.

LONDON -- Paintings by Gustav Klimt, Kazimir Malevich and Edouard Manet propelled Sotheby’s auction of Impressionist and modern art to 178.6 million pounds ($280.4 million) this past week.

A warrant for the arrest of the graffiti giant, best known for creating the "Hope" image of President Obama during his 2008 election campaign, has been issued by enforcement officers.

PORT-AU-PRINCE -- It's been nearly three decades since Haiti's Triomphe cinema shuttered its doors, but the storied theater is back -- and with a bit of Hollywood swag to boot.

BASEL -- Art Basel 2015 has closed in Switzerland with good stand presentations, a strong collector attendance, and exceptional sales to confirm its position as the premier fair for contemporary and Modern works.

LOS ANGELES -- The J. Paul Getty Museum has just acquired an important early sculpture by the Baroque master Bernini: a marble bust of Pope Paul V that many art historians did not believe still existed.

Basel -- At 11:30 p.m. on Monday, billionaire Dan Loeb was part of the crowd at the bar of Les Trois Rois, a 334-year-old hotel overlooking the Rhine River that serves as the unofficial after-hours trading floor at this Swiss city’s annual modern and contemporary art fair.
At one table, dealer Larry Gagosian joined gallerist William Acquavella and Alberto Mugrabi, whose family owns the largest private collection of art by Andy Warhol. At another table, billionaire money manager Steven Cohen drank red wine.
In the unregulated $54.1 billion art trade, relationships among gallerists, collectors and museum curators can be as important for determining prices and striking deals as the art itself.

BASEL -- Billionaire hedge fund manager Dan Loeb and Lightyear Capital Chairman Don Marron are among the collectors who will head to the Swiss city of Basel to check out the world’s largest modern and contemporary art fair.

Holograms Depict Blown-Up Buddhas

BAMIYAN VALLEY, CENTRAL AFGHANISTAN -- There was an international outcry in 2001 when the iconic Buddhas of Bamiyan were dynamited and destroyed by the Taliban, on orders from leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, after the Taliban government declared that they were idols.
Later, an envoy visiting the United States attempted to explain that the statues were destroyed to protest international aid exclusively reserved for statue maintenance while Afghanistan was experiencing famine.
While the Afghan Foreign Minister claimed that the destruction was merely about carrying out Islamic religious iconoclasm.
International opinion strongly condemned the destruction of the Buddhas, which in the following years were seen as an example of the extreme religious intolerance of the Taliban.
Restituted 'Riders' Rivets Auction

Bacon's Pope Pops at Auction

LONDON -- A work from of Francis Bacon’s most famous series of paintings, of seated and often screaming popes, is to go on sale July 1 with an estimated value of £25m to £35m.
When the canvas last went under the hammer in 2005, “Study for a Pope I” (1961) fetched £10 million -- at the time this was a record for the artist.
But even if the work goes under the hammer for the lower end of the latest price estimate, it would still equate to a rise in value of 150 percent.

Alan Bond -- Collector, Con -- Dies at 77

Perth -- Alan Bond the highly charismatic yet controversial Australian businessman and art collector has died age 77.

Honored as Australian of the Year after winning the America's Cup yacht race in 1983, Bond was convicted of four fraud charges surrounding the sale of Edouard Manet's La Promenade. He was jailed for four years. His empire crumbled as a result and he was eventually bankrupted.
In 1996 he was convicted of swindling Aus $1.2 billion ( US$800 million) to prop up his ailing Bond Corporation.
Berlin Gallery Highlights Cuban Art

BERLIN -- The first solo exhibition in Europe by the Cuban artist Eduardo Rubén will be opening in Berlin at House of Egorn, on 11 June. Hailing directly from the current Havana Biennial, the show at Sharon Zhu’s new Berlin space will be curated by Victor Wang.

VERSAILLES -- Anish Kapoor, the highly regarded contemporary British artist, has created controversy with his latest French exhibition, opening at the Palace of Versailles, on 9th June.

Kapoor, brings a more political perspective on power and its depiction at Versailles as it celebrates the tercentenary of Louis XIV’s death. Kapoor told a French interviewer it signified "the vagina of the queen coming into power" -- but later said the work was open to interpretation.
Artist Creates Indoor Clouds

NEW YORK CITY -- The lifespan of a typical Berndnaut Smilde sculpture is 10 seconds -- just long enough to be photographed. And his sculptures are as unusual as they are ethereal: Smilde makes perfect miniature clouds in a diverse array of indoor locations, from coal mines to cathedrals.

Heirs Sell Klimt 'Gertrud'

LONDON -- An important portrait by the Secessionist artist Gustav Klimt is to go under the hammer following a settlement between the Felsovanyi Heirs and The Klimt Foundation, Vienna.
Sotheby’s London have announced that Klimt’s understatedly beautiful painting Bildnis (Portrait) Gertrud Loew,1902, will be offered for sale in its 24th June Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale.

The painting (est. £12-18 million / $18.5-27.7 million) depicts the ethereal figure of Gertrud Loew, later known by her married name Gertha Felsovanyi, a member of fin-de-siecle Viennese society, wreathed in diaphanous folds of gossamer fabric.
