New Museum of Modern Art For Berlin

Berlin will have a new museum of modern art from 2021. The German parliament has allocated €200 million to build a new museum just behind the Neue Nationalgalerie on the Kulturforum, which was built in the 1950s and 1960s near the famous Potsdamer Platz, in the shadow of the Berlin wall. Berlin’s museum of modern art is expected to be around 14,000 m2 and will house several different collections, including the collection from the Nationalgalerie, of course, which will take up around 5,000 m2 and will only feature one third of the works currently held in the building designed by Mies van der Rohe in the 1960s. The new museum will also house the Erich Marx collection, which includes works by Joseph Beuys, Dan Flavin, Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly, among others, that have been on loan to the Hamburger Bahnhof since 1996; the Heiner Pietzsch collection, of 150 spectacular surrealist works that are supposed to be on permanent display in the Neue Nationalgalerie, but are clearly not; and the Egidio Marzona collection, most of whose 372 conceptual, minimalist, land art and Arte Povera masterpieces are also hidden in the reserves of the Neue Nationalgalerie. A call for projects will be launched by the European Union in early 2015. In the meantime, the Nationalgalerie will soon close for renovations that are expected to take three years. Be warned! This is the last time for quite a while that visitors will be able to admire Kirchner’s Potsdamer Platz and Picasso’s Femme assise.
