The Tate has joined with Minecraft to develop its first video game, Tate Worlds. Tate Worlds features several levels in which players create their own virtual world from paintings and sculptures in the museum’s collections. According to Jane Burton, Tate Media’s artistic director, the video game is an innovative way of ‘introducing a new generation to inspirational works from Tate’s collection. ‘
The first two worlds were made available free of charge on tate.org.uk/tateworlds on Monday 24 November. Enthusiasts of the genre can stroll along the Thames, in André Derain’s fauve- era London, as per The Pool of London (1906), and explore the futurist New York of Christopher Nevinson, as per The Soul of Soulless City (1920).
Six more worlds maps based on the game’s themes of ‘Play’, ‘Destruction’ and ‘Fantasy’ will be released over the coming year. Prepare to experience The Destruction of Pompeii and Herculaneum (John Martin, 1822), Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (John Singer Sargent, 1885-1886), The Toy Shop (Peter Blake, 1962) and Cold Dark Matter: An exploded View (Cornelia Parker, 1991) like never before.
