BEAUFORT — When Donna Lee Nyzio and Joy Rave met in April, they quickly connected and soon their conversation had naturally progressed to a discussion about opening an art studio and gallery together.

The pair has created the Beaufort Art Market, at 129 Middle Lane, and has big plans for the space to attract renowned artists and students alike for demonstrations and classes.

The business has come together so quickly the pair jokes they are trying to keep up with themselves.

The Beaufort Art Market will be a gallery for area artists’ work, as well as studio space for demonstrations and classes on everything from painting, photography and jewelry making with partner Rachel Croom.

The gallery will likely have a 20 percent commission on pieces it sells, said Ms. Nyzio.

“We’ll do it all, we’re very open minded,” she said in reference to what mediums will be offered.

She added the goal is to bring art to as many people as possible. “We really like art and we really want to bring art to everyone.”

She is a self-proclaimed “recovering photo-realist,” who now paints in abstract realism that brings a realistic scene to life, while the abstract portion encourages texture.

Ms. Rave favors acrylic abstract painting, a technique she learned from a neighbor at her second home in Winston-Salem. She also gravitates toward gallery work.

Although the pair is decidedly different in their techniques, together they have successfully joined to make their concept a reality.

The group will partner with the nearby Craving Art Studio to help supply students with the extra space or supplies they may need.

One aspect that sets the Beaufort Art Market aside is its use of telecommunications that can bring artists to the area through videoconferences. The large television monitor can also be used to showcase art that isn’t currently in the gallery, but is available for purchase.

The first class on jewelry making, featuring Ms. Croom, will be held today, with additional classes offered before the official grand opening is held next month.

Another idea the Beaufort Art Market has is to provide a “history week,” with a specific theme, where large groups gather to paint the same subject already been sketched onto a canvas.

The first history week will be held this fall and will feature Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, two famous Mexican artists and muralists who had a rough marriage.

Although the market’s website, beaufortartmarket.com, is not fully functional yet, it does include a list of upcoming classes and demonstrations that will be held.
