Art-Competition.net: Announces a Call to Artists for "Abstract ll" an online-juried international competition, July 10, 2015 - August 17, 2015 (Midnight EST), Cash Prizes are Doubled, $1,500 in Cash and $6,825 in Prizes. (Winners will receive extensive marketing of their work.)

Theme: "Abstract ll" The artist's work can be the "abstracting of representational objects" as in expressionistic, surrealistic or cubistic work. "Pure abstraction" is also accepted where there is little to no visual references of the external world.

Medium: All 2D Mediums, Painting, Drawing, Collage, Photography, Digital, Etc...
Cash Awards and Prizes:

First Place: $1,000 in Cash, an Artist Website Pro website for one year with live tech support = Value $125.

Artist will become a "Featured Artist" in AWP's International Artist Directory that is marketed to over 10,500 art buyers = Value $1,500.

The winner's artwork will also be marketed in our email marketing campaign "Art Market News™" with over 16,000 subscribers = Value $3,575.

Total first place prize value = $6,200*

Second Place: $250 in Cash, an Artist Website Pro website for one year with live tech support = Value $125.

The artist will be featured as a "Notable Artist" in AWP's International Artist Directory that is marketed to over 10,000 art buyers = Value $1,500.

Total second place prize value = $1,875*

Third Place: $125 in Cash

Total third place cash value = $125*

Fourth Place: $75 in Cash

Total fourth place cash value = $75*

Fifth Place: $50 in Cash

* The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place winner's art will be featured in

Forest Ecology Hike to the Channels: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Meet at Hayter’s Gap Community Center, Free. This is a strenuous climb to one of the area’s most extraordinary natural phenomena: The Great Channels, a geologic wonder.

Build a Toy Workshop: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Barter Tent, Free. Lowe’s personnel will be bringing wooden toys for kids to build and decorate.

Opening reception for “Backcountry Makers”: 6 to 8 p.m., William King Museum of Art, Free. The community is invited to the formal opening reception for “Backcountry Makers: An Artisan History of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.”

Companion Plants for Rhododendrons: 7 to 8:30 p.m., Virginia Highlands Community College, Free. Gardening expert Snow Fereniea will talk about and illustrate companion plants that complement rhododendrons in your garden.

A Woman’s Place: Women in Appalachia Yesterday and Today: 7 to 8 p.m., Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, Free. Dr. Angela Frye Keaton of Tusculum College will discuss her research that shows that women contributed to building and maintaining much of Appalachian society beyond the hearth and home.

Woody Pines with guests Thomas Taylor and Highrize: 7 to 11 p.m., Market Pavilion, $7.50 online, $10 at the door. Woody Pines brings his down home swing at 7 p.m. followed byTthomas Taylor and HighRize.

Antiques Market: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, $5 or $15 for the run of the show. Enjoy shopping two large tents filled with antiques: furniture, porcelain, jewelry, paintings, rugs, linens, paintings and more.

Arts & Crafts: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Remsburg Drive, Downtown, Free. The annual Juried Arts & Crafts show features dozens of vendors from throughout the U.S.

Photography Exhibition and Competition: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., William King Museum of Art, Free. View the entries of this regional photography competition.

Juried Fine Arts Show and Gallery: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Arts Depot, Free. View the work of regional visual artists at this most prestigious of art competitions in the area.

Quilts of Appalachia: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Holston Mountain Artisans, Park Street, Free. Quilts of all sizes, patterns and ages will be on display.

Youth Art Exhibit: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., William King Museum of Art, Free. Work by talented young artists is on display on the basement level of the museum.

“Back Country Makers” and “Into the Green”: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., William King Museum of Art, Free. Area historian Betsy K. White has curated an exhibition of artifacts from this region- -pottery, weavings, metalwork, quilts, furniture, etc. while another exhibit is a retrospective of the career of Abingdon artist Charles Vess.

Portraits by Aline: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Barter Tent, Varied prices. Hand drawn portraits, oil, pastel and charcoal by order. Quick sketches and caricatures by sitting or order.

Express It Face and Body Art: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Barter Tent, $5-$25. Face painting, glitter tattoos, hypo-allergenic products only.

Friends of the Library Book Sale: 1 to 5 p.m., Washington County Public Library, Free..

Colonial Trade Faire: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, Fields-Penn House, Free. Learn from craftsmen about America's past—leatherworking, woodcarving, blacksmithing, and many others-and buy the products.

White's Mill Tours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. White’s Mill Road, Free. See the actual working of an 18th century mill which provided stone ground cornmeal, grits, and flour for the kitchens of early America.
