At first glance, the art world might seem complex, since there are so many players involved. Armed with the right knowledge, however, you can quickly transform into an art market connoisseur. This short guide will allow you to quickly recognize the many players in the art world.

1. Primary Market Dealers

Primary market dealers represent living artists and market their works. They spot new talent and maintain ties with potential buyers (primarily galleries). Primary market dealers also serve as intermediaries among artists, curators, critics, and collectors.

2. Secondary Market Dealers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-9YLMJEymQ

Secondary market dealers oversee the work that is brought to the market for resale, and they work on behalf of collectors, institutions, and estates. They specialize in particular eras or artists, developing a unique background that equips them to distinguish gradations of authenticity and value.

3. Curators

On top of providing expert commentary, curators are extensively educated in art history and are often given creative control over the executions of exhibitions.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCJ473drri0

4. Gallerists

The gatekeepers of the art market, gallerists decide which emerging or established artists to feature in gallery exhibitions. They often have strong relationships with artist estates, where they often have exclusive access to the most sought after pieces.

5. Art Advisors

Art advisors serve as the legs and eyes for collectors who are too busy to make the rounds themselves. These experts have years of experience, allowing them to find works that fulfill their clients’ wishes, both financial and cultural. Most importantly, art advisors bring their immeasurable insight and connections with galleries and private collectors.

Next week, we’ll look at where these players interact; we’ll distinguish between auction houses, art fairs, museums, and galleries -- essentially, anywhere people can buy art.
