Artists sought for annual Red Flannel Festival

The Red Flannel Art Review of Cedar Springs is entering its third year
and is seeking artists to compete for $900 in cash prizes.

Local businesses will provide space for artists to display their work.
Applications for entry are due by 5 p.m., June 30, and must be turned
into the Red Flannel office, located on Main Street, or mailed to
P.O. Box 43, Cedar Springs, MI 49319.

There is a $25 entry fee and artists must be 18 years of age by July 1
to enter. Venues will be chosen for artists who do not make their own
arrangements.

Voting will run from the end of August through Sept. 15. Winners will
be announced at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 19, at the Red Flannel Beer and Wine
Tasting at the American legion Glen Hill Post.

Art will remain on display until Oct. 5.

Arts council seeking applications for Duke grants

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County is seeking applications for its
Duke Energy Regional Artist Project Grants. These grants support artists and
unincorporated arts organizations in Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes, Surry
and Yadkin counties to help them further their professional development.
Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. July 10.

Guidelines, applications and information are available online at
www.intothearts.org, and the arts council staff will hold the following
information sessions:

4 p.m. Monday: Hanes conference room, Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts,
251 N. Spruce St.

6 p.m. Monday: Arts United for Davidson, Uptown Lexington, Inc., 4 E.
First Ave.

5:30 p.m. Tuesday: Davie County Arts Council, Brock Performing Arts Center,

622 N. Main St., Mocksville

Sessions were held last week in Surry and Yadkin counties.

In the last funding cycle, the arts council made a total of $30,000 in
awards in this grant category.

Symphony hires new chorale director

Officials at the Winston-Salem Symphony have announced the appointment of
Christopher Gilliam to the positon of symphony chorale director, effective immediately. Gilliam was selected following a national search. He replaces
Carole Ott who is leaving to focus on her work at UNC Greensboro.

A North Carolina native, Gilliam has performed extensively as a conductor
and soloist throughout the United States and abroad, including the Czech
Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Romania, Russia,
Spain and Switzerland.

He joined Davidson College as director of choral activities in the fall of
2012. At Davidson, he conducts the Chorale, Davidson Singers, Choral Arts
Society and Pro Arte Orchestra, oversees the departmental student-led initiatives —
the early music ensemble, Collegium Musicum and After Hours Vocal Jazz.

Gilliam is also the founder, artistic director and conductor for Lake Norman
Choral Artists, a semi-professional choral group. He received his doctorate
in choral conducting and vocal performance in 2003 from the University of Kansas
, where he studied conducting with Simon Carrington, professor emeritus at
Yale University, and voice with bass-baritone John Stephens.

Gilliam has performed with the Winston-Salem Symphony on several occasions.

Artists needed for Fine Arts Doors 6 competition and auction

The Milford Arts Council is seeking artists to take part in the Doors 6 – Art You
Can Live With event.

Deadline for submission is July 1. Doors must be delivered to Milford Center for
the Arts by Aug. 11.

Doors 6 is a juried art exhibit.

Accepted artists will create a work of art using any type of box, chest, trunk etc.
Minimum size is 9 x 12. The item must be decorated inside and out and be fully functional.

Completed artwork will be on display at the Milford Center for the Arts from Aug.
14 through Sept. 20, when it will be auctioned to benefit the Milford Arts Council.
The artist will receive 50% of the selling price.
