Applications accepted for Artist Studio Tour

he 19th annual Take in the Local Color! Lubbock’s Artist Studio Tour will take place on Nov. 14-15 in Lubbock. The Lubbock Arts Alliance is accepting artist and host studio applications.

Artists must complete an application and submit digital images of their work by Monday for consideration.

Applicants must be full time Lubbock County residents and produce handmade, original art. All media are accepted, including painting, photography, ceramics/pottery, glass, jewelry, metal, fiber, leather and mixed media.

Members of the West Carleton Arts Society were treated to a workshop with well-known, award-winning artist Lila Lewis Irving.

Lee Anne LaForge, gallery co-ordinator for the West Carleton Arts Society, took a previous course with Irving and came back with rave reviews.

She asked Irving if she’d be willing to come to Ottawa and teach a five-day workshop and Irving agreed.

“It’s amazing,” said LaForge on June 4, day four of the workshop. “We can touch greatness.”

Irving spent five days with 14 members of the arts society, teaching them about non-objective painting techniques.

“It’s been great,” said Irving, adding about half the students had no experience with abstract painting before the workshop.

She focused the class on painting with and without brushes, how to use light and dark, and shapes and colour before setting them loose to paint on canvas.

“(They’ve been) very good, very industrious,” said Irving. “They all learned a lot.”

Irving was born in New York City and moved to Mississauga in the 1960s. She has a Master of Fine Arts in theatre arts from the University of Iowa and a Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts in fine arts from the University of Wisconsin.

She studied with master abstractionist Helen Frankenthaler and is a member of the Ontario Society of Artists and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour.
